Many families are seeking ways to lower their health insurance cost. For those without health insurance, one tempting option is a health Discount plan. These plans are typically offered for as little as $10 per month for an individual to well over $100 per month for a family. While the advertising and marketing of health Discount plans make them sound like insurance, they are not insurance plans. Most Discount plans promise a savings of 10 to 50%, but keep in mind, a 40% discount on a $100,000 hospital bill will still leave you owing $60,000.

Mini-Med health insurance plans have also been heavily promoted in recent years. A number of insurance companies have recently introduced new health insurance plans, that at first glance appear similar to traditional plans, but in fact they have substantially reduced benefit limits. Quite a few Mini-Med plans have an annual maximum benefit for outpatient procedures as low as $2,500, when it is not uncommon for an outpatient procedure to exceed $10,000. Our greatest concern about Mini-Med plans is that they have extremely low maximum lifetime benefits. We have seen lifetime benefits as low as $25,000. UniCare's maximum lifetime benefit is $5,000,000 regardless if procedures are performed in or out of the hospital.
